New York State ASCD Report
Susan Pratt, Representative at Large

Janet Perrin Designated as Outstanding Educator of the Year

The annual NYSASCD Fall Conference was the occasion for honoring a member of each regional affiliate as an Outstanding Educator of the Year. NYSASCD has identified improving their relationships with regional affiliates as one of its long-range goals. This fall Anthony Mello, Executive Director, and James Collins, President Elect, attended the LIASCD Fall conference. In addition, each affiliate was asked to nominate one of its members for the newly established award. Janet Perrin, the now retired principal of Thomas Lahey Elementary School in the Harborfields school district and long time treasurer for
LIASCD was nominated for this prestigious award. Janet and her husband were guests of NYSASCD at the fall conference held at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in historic Saratoga Springs. Janet was honored with two other affiliate members from the Capital Region and Genesee Valley.

LIASCD members continue to make significant contributions to NYSASCD. Lorna Lewis and Gene Silverman participated in the summer retreat at West Point in July that focused on developing a strategic plan for the organization for the next 3 years.   Fadhilika Atiba-Weza, Assistant Superintendent of the Central Islip UFSD, was nominated and elected to serve as a Representative-at-Large and Susan Pratt, Director of Curriculum in the Hewlett-Woodmere UFSD was elected to the position of Secretary for the 2003/04 school year.

NYSASCD is continuing to expand workshop offerings co-sponsored by regional affiliates and SUNY, New Paltz. This year Gayle Gregory has lead workshops in Differentiated Instruction in Rochester and Albany.  Workshops on "The Impact of Poverty on Learning" and "The Use of Data in Instructional Decision Making" are planned for the spring.

NYSASCD Executive Board members will attend the annual ASCD conference in San Francisco. I will be serving as a designated member of the National Board of Directors for the annual ASCD Board of Directors Meeting. ASCD is restructuring and this will be the last meeting of this group that will be replaced by the new Leadership Council. Mary Ellen Freeley, Superintendent of the Glen Coves Schools and past president of LIASCD and NYSASCD, serves on the Board of Directors.

The winter meeting of the executive board of NYASCD will be held in January at the Gideon Putnam in Saratoga Springs.
